Pasgeborenen van ouder(s) met een licht verstandelijke beperking groeien vaker op in een opvoedsituatie waarin sprake is van onveilige ouderschap, zoals inconsistentie, weinig sensitiviteit en zelfs kindermishandeling en verwaarlozing. Dergelijk ouderschap kan negatieve gevolgen hebben voor de ontwikkeling van het kind, zowel tijdens de vroege ontwikkeling van het kind (zoals vroeggeboorte en een laag geboortegewicht), als tijdens de latere ontwikkeling van het kind (zoals school- en werkuitval, sociale problemen en delinquentie). Kinderen van ouders met een licht verstandelijke beperking, en vooral kinderen jonger dan 1 jaar, zijn dan ook oververtegenwoordigd in de kinderbescherming. Bovendien duren de maatregelen bij deze kinderen vaak langer en hebben zij een verhoogd risico op een uithuisplaatsing.

Om ouders met een licht verstandelijke beperking te ondersteunen in het voorkomen van dergelijke onveilige opvoedsituaties, is het van belang om zo vroeg mogelijk te interveniëren, zelfs al tijdens de zwangerschap. Succesvolle preventie staat of valt met een goed inzicht in de risico's die onveilige omstandigheden met zich meebrengen voor het kind.

Deze studie heeft dan ook onderzocht (a) welke risicofactoren veel voorkomend zijn bij aanstaande ouder(s) met een licht verstandelijke beperking rondom de zwangerschap, en (b) welke risicofactoren in relatie staan tot de veiligheid van het kind. De resultaten worden gepresenteerd in de factsheet (zie foto/bijlage onderaan de pagina).
